Extraction of Natural Colourant from Different Fruit Wastes: A Review

Abstract:

The increasing environmental concerns of synthetic dyes and the accumulation of agro-industrial waste have generated interest in sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives, such as natural colorants made from fruit waste. This paper mainly focuses on the extraction of natural colours and pigments from different fruit byproducts such as peels, pomace, seeds, husks, nutshells, and fruit pulp from various fruit crops. Different methods of extraction are discussed. The review highlights the presence of valuable bioactive pigments with improved coloring capacity and potential applications. The use of fruit waste to produce natural dyes contributes to promoting waste valorisation, environmental preservation, and circular economy principles by reducing pollution and producing goods with added value. Although challenges related to stability, standardization, scalability, and commercialization still exist, ongoing research and technological advancements indicate strong future potential for fruit waste-derived natural colorants as sustainable substitutes for synthetic dyes.
